The work
A licensed mechanic’s signature is what makes an aircraft legal to fly, and that is the job in one sentence. The work is scheduled inspection, fault diagnosis and repair to a published standard, with a paper trail behind every action. It is a licensed trade, entered by apprenticeship or by an approved training course rather than by degree.

The hard parts
Hangars are cold in winter and hot in summer, and heavy maintenance runs at night because that is when aircraft are on the ground. The paperwork is not bureaucracy — a repair with no record did not happen — and it takes as long as the work. Your signature carries legal weight for years afterwards.
