The work

Aviation forecasting is applied physics with a deadline. The output is not a description of the weather — it is a decision aid: will this airport go below minimums, will the icing be in the climb, is that line of storms going to sit across the departure route at the wrong hour. Being usefully specific and being honest about uncertainty are both part of the job.

How it unfolds

1. DegreeMaths and physics, then atmospheric science. The modelling is not optional.
2. Years 1-2Observing and assisting. Learning the local effects that no model captures.
3. Years 3-6Forecast desk. Issuing, amending and defending terminal forecasts on a schedule.
4. LaterSpecialist forecasting, model development, or briefing at a national centre.

Is there a job in it

The hard parts

You will be wrong in public, on a schedule, and the verification is kept. Shift work covers the clock because weather does. And the pressure to say something definite when the honest answer is a probability is constant, and giving in to it is the one professional failure that matters.
