The work

Software engineering is the largest single occupation in this list and the least tied to any one industry, the same skills that ship a banking app ship a game engine or a hospital scheduling system. What changes between jobs is the domain, not the discipline: reading, writing and testing code that has to keep working after you have moved on to something else.

How people get in

• Computer science degree

  Still the most common route, and the one large employers screen for by default.

• Self-taught plus portfolio

  A real, working project you built and can explain beats a certificate with nothing behind it.

How it unfolds

1. Degree or portfolioComputer science formally, or a self-taught path proven with real, shipped projects.
2. Years 1-3Junior engineer. Implementing well-specified features inside someone else’s architecture.
3. Years 4-8Owning a service or a feature area outright, including the decisions that go wrong.
4. LaterStaff engineer setting technical direction, or engineering management.

Is there a job in it

The hard parts

The learning never stops and most of it is not glamorous: reading other people’s code, tracking down a bug that only appears in production, and maintaining something you built two years ago and no longer remember the reasoning for. The industry also rewards recent graduates unevenly, the same degree lands very different starting offers depending on which companies are hiring that year.
