Designs the radio link that has to carry every command and every byte of data across the distance to a spacecraft.

Spacecraft Communications Engineer, career poster

The work

A spacecraft is only useful if it can be commanded and can send its data back, and the link that does that gets weaker the further away the vehicle is, following an inverse-square law that does not negotiate. Communications engineers design the transponders, antennas and modulation schemes, and run the link budget calculation that proves, on paper, that a signal too faint to hear directly can still be recovered reliably on the ground.

A typical day

  • 01Run link budget calculations against the mission’s actual distances and data rates
  • 02Design and test antennas, transponders and modulation schemes
  • 03Coordinate frequency allocation with regulators and the ground network
  • 04Diagnose link performance against telemetry once the spacecraft is flying

How people get in

  • Electrical engineering degree, RF emphasis

Communications theory and antenna design courses specifically matter more here than the general degree title.

How it unfolds

  1. DegreeElectrical engineering with a genuine RF and communications theory grounding, not just a mention of it.
  2. Years 1-3Link budget analysis and test support, learning why the margin is never as generous as it looks on paper.
  3. Years 4-8Designing the comms subsystem architecture for a spacecraft, including how it degrades gracefully.
  4. LaterCommunications subsystem lead, or into deep-space network operations.

Electrical and Electronics Engineers · US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2024 wages and 2024–34 projections.

Electronics engineers specifically (a sub-line inside this figure) report a $130,220 median. RF and spacecraft communications is one specialism inside a broad occupation that spans consumer electronics, industrial controls and telecoms alike.

The hard parts

The signal only gets weaker with distance, never stronger, and a mission that goes further than Earth orbit turns every decibel of margin into something worth fighting for at the design stage. A comms failure can mean a spacecraft nobody can command any more, which has happened, and the fix has to be designed in ahead of time because it cannot be fixed afterward.
